In the spirit of the 4th of July, nothing says holiday picnic like the infamous hot dog. Love them or hate them, we all share great memories around this American institution but with various cultural preferences and unique twists to the traditional. Just for fun, I wondered how everyone liked their “dogs”…so I asked my friends on facebook how they would be dressing their hot dogs during picnic season and here are the creative and responses that I received. Thanks to local celebs Rick Sebak and Dave Hallawell for chiming into the conversation…their word is church! Check out our fun little discussion….

Funny you should ask, there is a Northwest tradition of cream cheese on dogs and it surprisingly good! If you ever make it to Seattle I treat you to one!

Nathan’s or Hebrew National hot dogs with Heinz ketchup, yellow and spicy mustard, fresh onion, and a bit of hot sauce if desired. I like Sheetz hot dogs with everything including nacho cheese. GetGo sells Nathan’s dogs now. I also like hot dogs from Shorty’s in Washington, Bert’s Dog House in Burgettstown, The Original in Oakland, and Brighton Hot Dog Shop in North Hills.

I love a chicken hotdog with turkey chili and low fat cheddar cheese on it all on a whole wheat bun, with a Clausen dill pickle on the side of course! I know all low fat, but none the less still very yummy!

This is gonna sound gross, but it is actually very yummy. Cream cheese and ketchup. Had it by accident, never would have asked for it. But now I do.

If you put ketchup on a hot dog here in Kansas, people will be utterly skeeved. NOT that I let that bother me or anything, but prepare yourself for an ear chewing if you’re in my current neck of the woods…

Hmm. At the O: mustard pickles onions. At Jim’s Hot Dogs in West Mifflin: grilled sauerkraut (superb!) onions and special sauce. In the southern states: mustard, chili, slaw. Actually, Fiddles in Brownsville, PA, has a pretty good chili-slaw dog too.

Love the “Chicago” dog! (Watch Sebak’s “Hot Dog Program” for the real deal!) D’z in Regent Square has a good version complete w/ neon relish, sport peppers & poppy seed bun. (also get the cheese fries!)

I feel so boring. I used to LOVE the DQ footlong hot dogs. The one in Carnegie had the BEST mustard and the onions were chopped so fine.
